In a significant move, Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as India’s T20I captain for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, the BCCI announced on Thursday (July 18). Jasprit Bumrah has been given a rest for the entire tour, while stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been included in the ODI squad.
Leadership Shake-Up
Shubman Gill has been named vice-captain for both the T20I and ODI squads, following his impressive leadership during the Zimbabwe tour. This decision marks a shift from Hardik Pandya, who was the vice-captain for the ODI World Cup and the recent T20 World Cup. Concerns over Hardik’s fitness have led to his exclusion from the captaincy role and the ODI squad for this tour.
Senior Players Strengthen the Squad
Despite initial uncertainty, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be available for the ODIs, adding significant experience and skill to the lineup. Surprising Omissions
Ruturaj Gaikwad and Abhishek Sharma, who performed well in the T20I series against Zimbabwe, have not been selected for this tour. Additionally, Sanju Samson, despite scoring a century in his last ODI appearance, will not be part of the ODI squad but remains in the T20I team.
Bowling Lineup
The ODI squad’s pace attack will feature Harshit Rana, Khaleel Ahmed, Mohd. Siraj, and Arshdeep Singh. Rishabh Pant returns to the ODI setup after a successful T20 World Cup. Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel will handle spin duties in the ODIs, with Axar also included in the T20I squad. Ravi Bishnoi will be the wrist spinner for the T20Is, while Yuzvendra Chahal has been omitted.
Tour Details
The series will start on July 27 with the T20Is in Pallekele, followed by the ODIs in Colombo. This tour is expected to set the tone for India’s preparations for future tournaments.
