Manchester United have had a €62m (£52m) offer accepted by Lille for defender Leny Yoro. The 18-year-old centre-back now has to decide whether to accept the move, with Real Madrid also expressing interest. United are currently negotiating personal terms with his representatives.
The deal includes an initial €50m payment plus €12m in add-ons. Real Madrid values Yoro lower and might wait until next summer, when he becomes a free agent. This situation makes Lille prefer selling Yoro to United now.
Yoro, primarily a centre-back, debuted for Lille in May 2022 at just 16 years old, becoming the club’s second-youngest player. He is one of three centre-backs United are pursuing, alongside Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt. United have generated funds by selling Willy Kambwala to Villarreal for up to €11.5m, Donny van de Beek to Girona for up to €9.1m, and Álvaro Fernández to Benfica for £5m. Their first recruit of the window, Bologna’s striker Joshua Zirkzee, is set to join for €42m. Ten Hag also remains interested in PSG’s defensive midfielder Manuel Ugarte, valued at about €45m.
Casemiro’s sale might be necessary to fund Ugarte’s purchase, although a loan deal for the Uruguayan is also possible. Yoro initially preferred joining Real Madrid, but they have not matched United’s offer, making Lille favour United for a summer transfer.
Yoro is warming to the idea of moving to Old Trafford, but some details remain unresolved. The France youth international is a throwback defender, often the last man in Lille’s defense, similar to Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk. Despite his deep positioning, Yoro’s agility and ability to read the game make him a valuable asset. His cautious approach to passing and ball carrying reflects his age and defensive role.
